Meeting Minutes for November, 2004

In attendance: Mike Sanford, Bob Sutherland, Brian Bradley, Martha Rester, Ed Langus, Jeane Croom, and Leonard Hart

Bob Sutherland (a past president of Common from 86-89 where he saw growth of the organization from 200 to 5000 during his tenure) now with Quincy Compressor in Bay Minette, led a discussion on disaster recovery (DR), reviewing the major points of the review they just finished.

Quincy has plants in Quincy, IL and Bay Minette and uses Sun Guard for their DR. As part of the contract, they test the DR annually and change the disaster scenario each time. The plan is to restore service in 48 hours.

The Quincy DR plan was very detailed and included sections such as:

  • Definition of key people with all ways to locate/notify i.e. phone, cellular, e-mail at home or office, etc.,
  • Definition of all equipment including specifications of each piece, where backup equipment is located, and how to get to it.
  • Detailed vendor lists in order to easily obtain supplies and equipment where necessary

Quincy reviews the plan annually to update any changes. The plan should include restore procedures including operating system(s) to ensure that all file/library/objects are restored (they found some that were not).

Brian suggested that we dispense with the December meeting because of the many other functions on everyone's calendars. Next meeting will be in January.
