Meeting Minutes for October, 2004
The following people attended the meeting:

Mary Cunningham, Ty Davis, Ed Langus, Sherelyn Breland, LaWanda Young, Leonard Hart, Brian Bradley, Petra Cain

The meeting started at 6:00 PM. Leonard as always made sure we had some good food to eat during our meeting from Saucy-Q Bar B Que, of course he also brought along some good dessert.

Mary Cunningham with GDS gave us some inside on using the iSeries to send and receive e-mail, using SNDDST, MMAIL and Keyesmail. She showed us how they have setup their iSeries to monitor for certain messages such as jobs that are in a msgw state, and then notifies her via e-mail or phone making her aware that there is a problem. Mary gave a very good presentation, she also printed out some instructions that will help us in setting up our AS400 if we need to. All documentation Mary had will be available on our website, www.gcmug.org , for download. If you need further help Mary has volunteered to help when ever she can, just drop her an e-mail with your question to her at mlc@gdsps.com. Brian Bradley from Vilden Associates showed us some nice alternatives to Microsoft's Internet Explorer called Firefox by Mozilla. Whether you are pro-Microsoft or anti-Microsoft, it is always good to have choices. Firefox is a open-source java created web browser which runs on any platform and has some advantages over IE. Brian also showed us some of the built in features in Firefox that allow you to block pop ups and keep websites from automatically installing software on your system. Firefox is a shareware program that is available for free download, look for a link to the site on our website, www.gcmug.org . There is also an e-mail program called Thunderbird that can easily replace your MS Outlook e-mail program, it is also available for free download from Mozilla. Also Brian mentioned that there will be a Linux Seminar held right here in Mobile, Alabama, it's a two day seminar being held at the Ashbury Hotel, the cost of the seminar is $995.00. The seminar will show you how to install, configure, administer and troubleshoot Linux. For further information check our website for a downloadable brochure. Last but not least we had a great roundtable discussion with LaWanda Young from IBM. LaWanda was telling us how the iSeries has been chosen for some of the Homeland security demands, some counties in Mississippi have been selected as the role model for other homeland security sites.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:45 PM.

Our next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday November 16, 2004, the topic will be on disaster recovery.
